Rules to Observe in a Yoga Class

Status Update
By Inner Glow Yoga
Dear Yoga Practitioners,

Some general notes for you all. A refresher once in a while does good!

1. The stomach should be empty while doing asanas and to ensure this they should not be practised until at least 3 to 4 hours after food.

2. The bladder and intestines should preferably be empty.

3. Wear loose, light and comfortable clothing. Remove spectacles,wrist-watch and any jewellery.

4. Always practise on a mat. Never on a bare floor.

5. A shower before starting will greatly improve the efferct of the asanas.

6. There are no special dietry rules for asana practise, though it is always better to eat natural food and in moderation.

7. Asanas may be practised any time of the day except after meals.

8. Practise in a well-ventilated room free from wind, cold, smoky or dirty air,a place where it is calm and quiet. Never near furniture!

9. Avoid inverted postures during menstruation.

10. Never excert undue force while doing asanas.

11. Asanas can be practised by people of all age groups, male and female.

12. Do not stay in an asana if there is discomfort or excessive pain in any part.

13. Always breathe through the nose unless specific instructions are given to the contrary.

14. Always practise with awareness, never mechanically.

To the above may I add these too........

1. Maintain silence in the class. Avoid loose talk, chatter and loud laughter in class. If you have to talk,do so in hushed tones, never loud. Respect the silence of others!

2. Ideally you may lie down in Shavasana before commencement of class, to quieten both body and mind.

3. Try to come atleast 5 to 10 minutes before a class starts.

4. And switch off handphones! No distractions as the class is in progress!

Remember,Yogasanas are techniques which place the physical body in positions that cultivate awareness, relaxation, concentration and meditation. Part of this process is the development of good physical health by stretching, massaging and stimulating the pranic channels and internal organs!

Pranams,
Ayyappan.
